Description:

Testor Classics - In 1925, the United States Navy and Army ordered similarly designed airplanes from the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company. Three planes were built exactly alike and were used to be in the Pulitzer Trophy Race, a contest for testing the latest improvements in design of pursuit of planes and engines.

The Curtiss R3C-1 (land plane) Racer won first and second place in the Pulitzer race in 1925 and proved it to be a plane superior to any built before that year. The tiny R3C-1 Racer was then transformed to a seaplane by substituting regulation Navy pontoons for wheels. The Racer was then called the R3C-2 Racer. This place had made a speed record for seaplanes on a closed course of 232 mph.
The span of this tiny racer was 22 ft. for the upper wing and 20 ft. for the lower wing, and the fuselage was 20 ft. in length. The engine was a V-1400 type 610 hp. pursuit model, an improved version of the Curtiss D-12 powerplant.
