Erupting Volcano
Instructions:

Building The Volcano

  1. Print out the volcano template located here.

  2. Using the template as a pattern cut out the volcano shape from poster board.  Draw a line .50” from the paper’s edge on one side.

  3. Roll the board to create a cone shape and overlap one edge on the .50” line.  Staple the bottom of the cone to hold it together while you use painters tape to strap the cone into shape.

  4. Place the cone on paper towels with wax or freezer paper beneath it.

  5. Coat the cone with Snow-Tex.

  6. Let the Snow-Tex set and dry completely.

  7. Add caulking to build up the base of the mountain and create a more realistic look.  Also add caulking vertically to create irregular formations.

  8. When dry, crudely tear away the paper towel from the base leaving remnants.

  9. pray the cone with a light coat of Moss Green paint and allow it to dry at least 15 minutes.

  10. Keep adding light coats allowing 15 minutes between each, until you achieve full coverage.

  11. Spray a few diagonally placed stripes with the Sand paint to create contrast.

  12. Place the volcano over an empty 16.9 oz. water bottle.

The Eruption

  1. Pour in the warm water to fill ¾ of the bottle.

  2. Add a small bit of dishwashing liquid.

  3. Add red food coloring if you want a colorful eruption.

  4. Add three or four spoonfuls of baking soda.

  5. Add a few drops of red food coloring to the vinegar for a colorful eruption.  Pour the vinegar into the bottle.  The amount of vinegar you add will control the size of the eruption.
